SO WHAT'S CHANGING?
From January 1st, 2022 all Queensland rental properties and all properties to be sold must be brought inline with the new smoke alarm legislation.
Smoke alarms must now be interconnected, installed on each storey and in all bedrooms and hallways and must be powered by mains power or a non-removable 10 year lithium battery.

Watch the video for a quick explainer.
Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom of the home
Smoke alarms must be interconnected (hardwired or wireless)
Smoke alarms must be mains powered or a 10 year lithium battery
Smoke alarms must be photoelectric rather than ionisation
SO HOW MANY SMOKE
ALARMS DO I NEED?
How many smoke alarms need to be installed in your property?
Well that all depends on a few things like...

-
How many bedrooms does the property have?
-
How many levels does the property have?
-
Are all of the bedrooms connected by the same hallway?
In Every Bedroom
Smoke alarms need to be installed in every bedroom. This includes any rooms that may be closed off and used as a bedroom, like a study.
In All Connecting Hallways
Smoke alarms need to be installed in every hallway that connects a bedroom to the rest of the house. So if you have bedrooms that connect to different hallways, you'll need a smoke detector in each hallway too.
In All Connecting Open Areas
Smoke alarms need to be installed in every open area that connects a bedroom to the rest of the house. So if you have bedrooms that don't open into a hallway, but connect to an open area, you'll need to install a smoke alarm here too.
On Every Level
If you've got a multi level house, smoke detectors must be installed on every level, even if there are no bedrooms on one of the levels.
On The Path Of Escape
If there are no bedrooms, smoke alarms need to be installed on the most likely path of escape.
