  • Do I really need to upgrade my smoke alarms?
If you meet the following criteria, YES you DO need to upgrade your smoke alarms; You are renting your property out. From the 1st January 2022 any property being rented out in QLD needs to have their smoke alarms upgraded to meet the new legislation. You are selling your property. From the 1st of January 2022 any property being sold in QLD nees to have their smoke alarms upgraded to meet the new legislation. If you are a resident in your own property and are not selling, then you DO NOT need to upgrade your smoke alarms to the new legislation until January 1st, 2027. However as that date gets closer we anticipate the cost of the upgrades to go up and the availablitly of qualified smoke alarm installers to come down.
  • How many smoke alarms do I need?
The new QLD smoke alarm legislation states that smoke alarms must be installed: on each storey in each bedroom in hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling if there is no hallway, between the bedroom and other parts of the storey; and if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling. So what does that all mean? Well, in the typical 3 bedroom, single storey house we typically need to install only 4 smoke alarms - 1 in each bedroom and 1 in the hallway that those bedrooms open into. In a 3 bedroom, two storey house where all of the bedrooms are on the top floor - we typically need to install 5 smoke alarms. 1 in each bedroom, 1 in the hall outside the bedrooms and 1 smoke detector on the ground floor. In a 4 bed, single story home where 3 bedrooms are at the rear of the property and another is at the front of the property we typically need to install 6 smoke alarms - 1 in each bedroom, 1 in the hall outside the 3 read bedrooms and 1 outside the bedroom at the front of the house. Please note: all of the above are examples only and our on site technician will determine how many smoke alarms are required once on site.
  • What type of smoke alarms do I need to install?
When it is time for your property's alarms to be upgraded, those alarms must: be photoelectric and comply with Australian Standard 3786-2014 not also contain an ionisation sensor; and be less than 10 years old; and operate when tested; and be interconnected with every other 'required' smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together Any existing smoke alarm being replaced from 1 January 2017 must be a photoelectric-type alarm which complies with Australian Standard 3786-2014.
  • Do the new smoke alarms need to be 'hard wired'?
No. Well, maybe... If you already have 'hard wired' smoke alarms in your property then they need to be replaced with 'hard wired' smoke alarms. However, only the existing hard wired smoke alarms need to be replaced with hard wired smoke alarms - all other required smoke alarms can be sealed, 10 year lithium ion battery smoke alarms. If you don't currently have any 'hard wired' smoke alarms then all newly installed smoke alarms can be the 10 year lithium iron battery type. The building code only requred 'hard wired' smoke alarms if your property was built AFTER the year 2000, so if your property is older than that, chances are you currently don't have any 'hard wired' smoke alarms installed. If someone tells you that all of your new smoke alarms need to be 'hard wired', THEY ARE WRONG. Feel free to get them to contact us and we will explain the legislation requirements. In all cases, our electricians will determine what type of smoke alarm needs to be installed and where it needs to be installed to ensure that your property meets the current legislation.
  • What happens when you arrive?
When we arrive at your property this is what will happen; We will inspect your property to determine the number and type of smoke alarms required and where they need to be installed. If this is different from what you have been quoted we will discuss why and proceed only if you are happy. If there are currently any 'hard wired' smoke alarms installed, we need to isolate the power to these smoke alarms. In most cases these 'hard wired' smoke alarms are powered from the lighting circuit in your home. We will isolate this circuit only and do not need to shut the rest of the power off in your home (all of your devices that are plugged into power points in your home will continue to have power). If for any reason we need to completely shut the power off in your home we will discuss this with you first and allow you to safely shut down any devices/appliances before we isolate the power Once the power has been isolated we will remove any existing, non compliant smoke alarms from your property. New, compliant smoke alarms will now be installed in all required locations in your home. Because we will be installing wireless, stand alone 10 year lithium ion battery smoke alarms we DO NOT need to run any new cabling and therefore do not need to enter your roof space or cut any holes in your ceiling or walls. If for any reason this is not the case, we will discuss with you before proceding. In bedrooms, we always try to install new smoke alarms just inside the door - center of door, 400mm inside the room. If this location does not meet requirements (at least 300mm from the corner of a wall or light fitting and at least 400mm from the blades of a fan or an air outlet) another location inside the room will be chosen. We always try to cover the holes/screw holes from your existing smoke alarms with the new smoke alarms if we can. However, please note that sometimes the old smoke alarms have been installed in locations that no longer meet requirements so you may have a hole/holes to patch or fill if we have to install the new smoke alarms in a different location. Once all the new alarms are installed, interconnected and powered up, we will test the alarms. This will require that we set off the smoke alarms several times. Please note that this is a very loud process and may have to continue for several minutes. We will always inform you before we set the alarms off so that you can prepare yourself, your children and/or your pets for this noise. Please note that this process is not optional and MUST be completed for the installation to be certified. If for any reason you do not allow us to set the smoke alarms off, certification will NOT be provided and you will be charged a further $149 for us to return and complete this process. Once the installation and testing has been completed we will clean up any mess created during the installation process.

  • What about a compliance certificate? Do I get one of those?
Yes, absolutely! We supply a compliance certificate with every installation at no extra cost. Once the installation is complete and our technicians are happy that the property is fully compliant, the compliance certificate will be generated on site. Once payment has been made, our system will automatically issue and email the certificate to you.
